Carol Nan (Mathews) Murie, age 74 and Pawnee tribal elder, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on the evening of Sunday, October 8, 2017 at her home in Yale, Oklahoma. She was born June 15, 1943 in Cushing, Oklahoma to Stacy and Helen (Kent) Mathews. Carol was a 1961 graduate of Pawnee High School where she then went on to attend Draughon's School of Business. She held a colorful variety of professions, working at various locations from Moore Business Forms, to Oklahoma State University's Physical Plant, to a CNA and healthcare provider at multiple facilities around Stillwater, Oklahoma. She married Kenneth Lynn Murie, Sr. of Pawnee, Oklahoma for 14 years and had 4 children.
Carol was a Christian woman who was cherished by many. She was lovingly referred to as "Mama" due to her kind and welcoming nature. She is survived by her four children and step children: Kenneth, Matthew, Kim, Michael, Alicia and Kendra; two grandchildren and step grandson: Maeghan, Jon Jon, and Edgar; one great-granddaughter: Karalyn; and many extended nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and other family members. "Mama" will be truly missed and her memory will be held dearly in her loved ones' hearts.
