Charles Chase, Jr. Charles Edward Chase, Jr., 79, went to the Lord on Tuesday, March 5th at the Oklahoma City Heart Hospital surrounded by the love of his wife, children and dear friends.
A 45-year resident of Stillwater, OK, he was born in Dodge City, Kansas on May 26th, 1939. Ed spent much of his childhood in California and Dighton, Kansas. Later, he moved to Inman, Kansas, where his family owned the Chase Grain Company. Upon graduating from high school in 1957, he attended Kansas State University and Emporia State University, where he specialized in international relations and social studies. At school, he met the love of his life, Cida S. Chase.
After graduating in 1961, they married in San José, Costa Rica. Their daughter Sabrina Marie was born in 1963; their son Christopher Wyatt followed in 1972. He completed his military service and then discovered his passion for teaching at Americus High School in Lyon County, Kansas. Ed went on to earn a Master's degree, enabling him to teach social studies and history. He also became an expert on the culture and lifeways of the Old Southwest.
In 1967 he moved to Norman, Oklahoma and worked for the Advanced Studies Division of the University of Oklahoma. He was drawn to community service and was instrumental in establishing one of the first food co-operatives in Oklahoma, a group home for young women in Monroe, Louisiana, and a school for children with special needs, also in Monroe. Ed served as a counselor at a correctional facility in Lexington, Oklahoma and helped families in need at the Community Action Agency in Stillwater, Oklahoma. In 1999, he began working for the Stillwater Public School System as a substitute teacher. His favorite activity of the last years of his life was teaching at Stillwater Junior High School. He had the highest regard for the faculty and students of this institution.
Ed was the beloved husband of Cida, the loving father of Sabrina and Christopher, and the devoted grandfather of Zalea Lynn and Jasmine Marie.
His memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 11th at the First United Methodist Church at 400 West 7th Avenue in Stillwater, OK (405) 372-5854. Mr. Chase has always been one of my favorite substitutes. I always knew that when he walked in the door that it would be a good day. I will miss all the stories that he would tell and him telling us about the books he was reading.
I am so sorry for you loss.
