When she diagnosed with brain cancer, Dovie M. (Rice) Kirtley never gave up. She never complained, maintaining a brave and cheerful outlook of an optimistic future - even through radiation and chemotherapy treatments, many hospitalizations and the pain. She died on Sept. 21, 2017, in Chandler, Arizona.
Dovie was born on February 21, 1936, and grew up in Glencoe, Oklahoma, where she graduated from Glencoe High School in 1954. After finishing school, she moved to Wichita, Kansas where she met James "Jim" Kirtley (who passed away in 1999). It was not long before the two were married. They lived in Wichita and both worked at Boeing Aircraft before moving their young family to Long Beach, California in 1964. Dovie moved to Arizona in 2007 to be near her daughters and their families; although she longed to return to California and the ocean. Dovie is survived by her two daughters: Sondra Kirtley of Chandler, Arizona and Kella Cragar of Maricopa, Arizona; two granddaughters, Nicole, and her husband Michael Roberts, and Stevie Cragar, four great-grandchildren: Natalie, Matthew, Morgan and Mylo. She was also survived by her sister Mary Lou (Rice) Dickson and brother-in-law, Billy M. Dickson, of Gilbert, AZ. She leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Hazel L. (Rice) Kincaid and Thomas L. Rice, brothers, Jack, Edwin, Norval and Bob Rice. Dovie will be buried in Solgohachia, Arkansas, where her ashes will be buried next to Jim.
