Eddie Basler, Jr., 93, died on August 30, 2017, surrounded by his cherished wife and children. His funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, September 4, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Eddie was born in Bridgecreek area of Grady county March 25, 1924 to Dovie and Edward Peter Basler. Eddie graduated from Bridgecreek High School at the top of his class. He learned how to weld while attending Okmulgee Tech then went to Seattle where he worked on Battleships. After returning to his family farm, he then entered the Army Infantry and served as a radio operator for the 106th Infantry which had been almost decimated in the Battle of the Bulge. After D-Day he was on a ship preparing to embark for Japan, when news of VJ-day came. He later returned to Bridgecreek and then enrolled at OU where he earned his BS and MS in Plant Physiology. Upon graduation from OU, Eddie was accepted as a doctoral student to work under, Dr. Barry Commoner, at Washington University in Saint Louis. While at St. Louis, he met Ruby Nell Norman at Delmar Baptist Church whom he married in 1956. Eddie then accepted the position of Plant Physiologist at Oklahoma State, where he retired as professor in 1990. While at OSU, he was a mentor for many students and published many papers on the translocation of herbicides. He was president of the OSU Sigma XI and was the faculty council.
Eddie was the example of "you can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy." Eddie enjoyed his farm northwest of Stillwater. He raised Hereford and Brangus cattle, had gardens, and baled hay. He always had a vegetable garden and a beautiful flower garden. He used his love of creating to become an accomplished woodworker. He retired at age 62 to spend more time on the farm and on his gardens.
Eddie was preceded in death by his sister, Eileen Stacy.
Eddie is survived by his wife, Ruby Nell; daughter, Susan Tomlinson and husband Tommy; sons, Steven Basler and wife Peggy; Mike Basler and wife Zoila, Barry Basler and wife Ruth Ann; brothers, Jerry and Dee; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
