After marrying Harriet McGaugh, he began a tour of duty in the air force in Japan, where he played on the basketball team for the Fuchu Tornados. After returning home, he began a career as a basketball coach in Larned, Kansas. Returning to Kansas City, Kansas, he coached basketball and golf at Washington High School and at Kansas City Kansas Community College, until retirement. He was an avid golfer in his later years. A kind man with a dry wit, he will be remembered by the many he coached. Deceased are a daughter, Susie, parents Frank and Susie, sisters Nancy Bigham, Joan Frieling, and Joyce Ogden.
