Grover's Story

Grover Rains, 91, died on November 22, 2017, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. A Memorial Service will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, December 2 at the First Baptist Church 500 E. Knipe Street, Perkins, Oklahoma. Arrangements are under the direction of Strode Funeral Home.

Grover was born on March 11, 1926 to Cecil and Rosa Rains. Grover married Patsy June Weathers in 1948 and they had three wonderful children. Grover served his country in the US Navy during WWII and also served in the US Army during the Korean War.

Grover attended Stillwater High School where he became an Oklahoma state high school individual champion his junior year. He then went on to attend Oklahoma State University where he won an NCAA national individual championship in 1951.

Grover taught and coached wrestling for thirty years in Oklahoma and California. Grover was very active in doing the things he loved Lions Club, gardening, church activities and helping with the Perkins wrestling team. The Perkins high school wrestling booster club established the Grover Rains Take Down Club in his honor to recognize outstanding wrestlers. Grovers dedication to wrestling did not go unnoticed as he was also inducted into the very prestigious Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2000.

Grover is survived by his wife, Virginia (1987-2017); son, Bryan Rains (Carol), daughter, Christy Paulson (Barry), daughter, Patti Komin (Mike); five grandchildren, Mike Komin , Wendy Komin (Simmons), Ashley Rains (Schindler), Ryan Paulson and Keri Paulson (Russell); nine great grandchildren, Marissa, Mike, Blane, Maggi, Presley, Meyer, Drew, Elle and Kate; dear friends, Keith and Leisa Ward.
