Hazel Delores Sutton, 88, of Stillwater died on February 3, 2017 in Stillwater. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday February 7, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Calvary Assembly of God Church in Stillwater. Burial will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Hazel a devoted and loving wife and mother, was born in Luther, Oklahoma on April 14, 1928 to Pearl and Matt Lowery. She lived most of her childhood in Western Oklahoma. She and her family were farmers and spent many hours in the cotton fields. She married Willie Everett Sutton on October 8, 1949. While growing their family, they lived in Western Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas and Colorado before settling in Stillwater and making it their home.
Hazel had a servant's heart and was the ultimate care giver. She not only was a home maker, but she provided in-home child care serving families for over twenty-five years and caring for more than one hundred children. Seeing a child always brought her joy and made her smile. Besides being her children and grandchildren's number one supporter, her hobbies were gardening, preserving/canning, and sewing. She and her husband attended and were members of Calvary Assembly of God Church.
Church and family functions were her main social activities. Later in life she obtained her driver's license and became more independent and took pride in that independence. In most recent years, she was less reserved and enjoyed being a jokester and prankster.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Matt L. Lowery and Pearl Mable (Jenkins) Lowery; brother, Wesley Lowery; and her husband, Willie Everett Sutton
She is survived by her siblings who are: Paulene Thomas (husband, Charles) of Chickasha, Oklahoma, and Herman Lowery (wife, Caroline) of Perryton, Texas. Children are: Doris and her husband Steve Williams of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Billy and his wife Jeanie Sutton of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, Rocky and his wife Deseria Sutton of Perry, Oklahoma, and Deborah and her husband David Shields of Stillwater, Oklahoma. Grandchildren are: Delores (Williams) Maxon, Wallace Williams, Renee (Williams) Maynard, Jason Sutton, Matt Sutton, Chad Burk, Arlene Burk, Jayce Burk, Kandice (Shields) Simon, David Ray Shields, and Karsten Shields. Hazel also had thirteen great-grandchildren: Rachel and Ryan Maxon, Savannah Lindley, Makaylah Maynard, Aubree and Caleb Sutton, Nevaeh Sutton, Brooklynn Russell, Easton Sutton, Landon Burk, Jillian Murphy, Max Simon, and Madilynn Shields.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to the Physicians Choice Hospice of Oklahoma or the Brookdale Living Center of Stillwater.
