Matthew David Freeman, 27, nephew of long-time Stillwater resident, Lee Freeman, passed away May 15 near Moab, Utah. A Celebration of Life service was held May 23 in Lawton at the Becker-Rabon Funeral Home. Matt is buried in his mother's family plot in the Mount Scott KCA Tribal Cemetery on highway 58 north of Lawton. The plaque next to his father's, on the Stillwater First United Methodist Church memorial wall, will be engraved in memory of Matt.
Matt was born June 2, 1989, in Augusta, Georgia, to Mark David Freeman and Dr.
Gretchen LaRue (Foster) (Freeman) Benavidez. He was named after his great-grandfather, Matthew David Freeman, and was proud to be the fourth 'David Freeman' in the family linage.
As a child Matt moved with his parents from Georgia to Arkansas and on to New
Mexico. Matt lived with his mother in New Mexico after his parents divorced in 1994. Following his mother's death in 2005 he lived with his aunt Lee Freeman and uncle Alan Shryock in Stillwater and then with his uncle Gordon and cousin Casey Foster in Lawton. Matt graduated from Lawton High School and attended Cameron University where he pursued art and music.
Matt will be remembered for his passion for knowledge, art, and music; his love of nature; and his gentle soul. Matt traveled his path and found his peace.
Matt was predeceased by his mother, father, paternal grandparents Dr. Robert David and Nell Cromer Freeman of Stillwater, maternal grandparents Billy Gordon and Edl Lee (Rhoades) Foster of the Meers community in southwest Oklahoma.
Survivors include aunt, Lee Freeman and uncle, Alan Shryock of Stillwater; uncle and aunt, Gordon Lee and Wendy Billings Foster of Meers; aunt, Kristan Edl Foster of Meers; cousin, Casey Gordon and wife Lindsey Foster of Edmond; aunt, Mary Torrez of Fayetteville, NC; and stepfather, Robert Benavidez of Belen, NM. Matt leaves behind many other aunts, uncles, cousins and relatives as well as many friends across the country all of whom were touched by his simple good nature.
