Robert's Story

Long-time Stillwater resident Robert (Bob) Freeman passed away January 23, 2017. He was 86. At the time of his death, he was residing at Perry Green Valley Nursing Home due to severe dementia.
Bob was born in Nicholson, Georgia, February 7, 1930, the first of two sons of Matthew David and Thelma Lee (Chandler) Freeman. His elementary and secondary education was in Jackson County public schools; he graduated high school in 1945.

Bob received a BS degree from North Georgia College, Dahlonega, 1948. He was accepted into graduate school at Purdue University, where he received his MS, 1952, and PhD, 1954, degrees. For all degrees, major in chemistry, minors in math and physics. He served as 1st Lt., Chemical Corps, US Army Reserve, 1949 - 1963 (no active duty).
Bob took a position as physical chemist with Goodyear Atomic Corporation in Portsmouth, Ohio, 1954-1955. He joined the faculty at OAMC (Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, now Oklahoma State University) as Assistant Professor 1955, retiring from OSU as Professor of Chemistry in June, 1988.
In the fall of 1955, the wife of one of Bob's OSU students was working for the Oklahoma Natural Gas Stillwater Area Home Service Director, Nell Cromer. The student and his wife arranged for a meeting between Bob and Nell, and the rest is history. Bob and Nell were married on Thanksgiving Day, 1957. They had two children, a son, Mark David, and a daughter, Lee Cromer.
During retirement, Bob and Nell enjoyed traveling throughout the US, Europe, Scandinavia, and Russia. Photography, bird watching, and reading were favorite activities.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph (1987); wife, Nell (2004); and son, Mark (2015). He is survived by his grandson, Matthew David Freeman, daughter, Lee Freeman, and son-in-law, Alan Shryock, of Stillwater.
Bob composed the following list of positions held, and honors received, during his professional career: Founder and Chairman, 1965, of Midwest High Temperature Chemistry Conference (now MHTSSCC; SS = Solid State); Visiting Scientist, Lawrence Livermore Lab, summer 1966; Consultant, Argonne National Lab, 1967-69 and 1979-1981; Visiting Scholar, University of Illinois, 1970-71, under a National Science Foundation grant; Visiting Scientist, National Bureau of Standards, 1980-81; Member, Commission on Thermodynamics, International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, 1977-89; editor of Bulletin of Chemical Thermodynamics (BCHTD) a 500+ page annual index to the world-wide literature on thermodynamics and thermodynamic data, 1976-90; Production Editor, Oklahoma Academy of Sciences (POAS), 1984-98; Oklahoma Academy of Science Award of Merit, 1999.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the caregivers of Perry Green Valley Nursing Home and Companion Hospice for the kindness and compassion shown to Bob while in their care.
A ceremony for the inurnment of the ashes of both Bob and Nell will be held this spring at the Stillwater First United Methodist Church columbarium.
