His time spent on this earth began April 24, 1940 in Childress, Texas. His father, Edward Elijah Benningfield died when Roy was 7 months old and his mother, Lesba Louisa brought him to Garvin County, Oklahoma so they could live with her family. Their farm was west of Erin Springs, south of Lindsay, Oklahoma. Roy graduated from Lindsay High School in 1958 and the following year he began classes at the new Oklahoma Christian College (OCC) in Oklahoma City. At OCC he walked up to Mary Lynne Womack and said I am going to marry you. They celebrated their 59th anniversary one month before his death.
In 1965, he began college classes at OSU Tech in Oklahoma City, while holding down two jobs. When his daughter was 7, she got to see daddy receive an associate in electronical engineering degree.
