Ruth S. Armstrong

January 22, 1919 - September 02, 2018

Ruth S. Armstrong Ruth Sirilda Armstrong was born on January 22, 1919 in Cheney, Missouri to Minnie Cleo (Hancock) and Boyd Hicks. She was one of 14 children. She had 9 sisters, 2 brothers and 2 half-brothers. She attended school southwest of Perkins, Oklahoma at Spring Hill School, where she completed the 8th grade.
At the age of 16 she began working, caring for a family that lived down the road, later she did the same in Guthrie and finally in Stillwater.
Ruth married Bob Armstrong on December 16, 1939. They lived in Stillwater from 1939-1947. Their son, Gary, was born March 18, 1941 and died on May 22, 1960. Ruth was proud that he was a Marine.
During the war Ruth worked for Jim Smith as a waitress at Smiths Restaurant. Ruth and Bob later moved to the Britton area in Oklahoma City, where Ruth went to work for Mecklenburg-Duncan Manufacturing. After she retired, Ruth went to work for Dee Morales and her family of three children. She loved the children and they loved her, calling her Aunt Ruth. She remained as care taker for these children until they no longer needed a sitter. In 2001 she made the move back to Stillwater to be nearer to her sisters.
Ruth was one of the kindest people you would ever want to meet. She had a smile for everyone, and loved to laugh. She loved hearing and telling jokes. She always made you feel better after a visit with her. She was up to date on everything from politics to the latest news article. She loved gardening and feeding the birds. Ruth had a wonderful outlook on life and dealt with whatever life handed her with grace and humility and had the good sense to know that this is only temporary. She was a good friend to all who knew her. She took care of herself, drove herself to all appointments, shopping, and took others when they needed a ride. She sat with most of her sisters during their illnesses.
Ruth liked to cook and bake. Whenever she was in the mood to bake, she would take a platter of cookies or a cake to the boys across the street at Fire Station #1. She always kidded them about when it came time to carry her off to the hospital, as to exactly how she wanted to be carried out of her house! They will know what she was referring to!
Ruth is survived by one sister, Jewel Maher and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, her parents and siblings; Alma & Jim Baker, Lena & Roy Burke, Imogene & Les Hardy, Ruby & Delmar Bowne, Ann & Jim Moore, Eloise & Frank White, Thelma & Thurman Bounds, Russell & Jean Hicks, Bob & Inis Hicks, Everett Hicks, Bud Hicks, Carl Maher and Buck McCorkle.
Services will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Burial will take place at the Tryon Cemetery following the funeral.
Aunt Ruth was loved by many.
