Vernon W. Langley, 94, died on Sept. 22, 2017, in Edmond, Oklahoma. His service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29, 2017, at Southside Baptist Church in Stillwater with pastors Joe Day and Wayne Sanmann officiating. A visitation will be held at Strode Funeral Home on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017 from 6 8 p.m. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Vernon was born on October 6, 1922, near Frisco, Oklahoma, to Walter E. Langley and Susie E. (Stroop) Langley. He met and married Carol A. Woods in Gentry, Arkansas November 14, 1943; they were married 65 years before she passed in 2009. He met and married Earlene Reid Langley March 17, 2011.
Vernon worked at numerous jobs over the years in Stillwater, including as a butcher, truck driver, bus driver, hauling hay. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) at the early age of 17 in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Vernon volunteered at the Stillwater Medical Center from 1986 to 2006.
On April 14, 1957, Vernon joined the Stillwater Police Department as a patrol officer. He retired as Director of Records and Communications in April 1981, and was very instrumental in modernizing the communications systems. Vernon served seven years with the Oklahoma State Pension and Retirement Board and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police #102 since 1957.
He was preceded in death by his wife Carol A. Langley, his parents, a sister who died at the age of two, Brothers Luther, Ernest, Juil, two brothers who died while very young and his Granddaughter Sondra Herring.
He is survived by his wife, Earlene Reid Langley; two daughters, C. Kay Gales (Gary) and Barbara Nolan (Charles deceased); Daryl Reid (Mary), Leslianna Judge (Ken), and Heath Reid (Jennifer); eighteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Southside Baptist Church Building Fund 1123 S. Perkins Road Stillwater, Ok. 74074 where he has been a member since 1955.
