William (Bill) Sullivan died Tuesday December 26, 2017 at the Stillwater Medical Center at the age of 88 after a brief illness.
Bill was born on February 22, 1929 in Evanston, ILL. to Walter and Florence (Nolin) Sullivan and grew up in Lebanon, IN. Bill enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1947. In 1948, he earned as NROTC scholarship and left the Marines to enter college. In 1952 while attending college, he met and married his beloved wife, lifelong companion and best friend, Carla June Marie Wilcox of Enid, OK. Later that year, Bill was called back to active duty during the Korean War and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. In December of 1953, the couple welcomed a son, William Michael Sullivan whom they called Mike. During the next 20 years, the family had wonderful adventures in Washington D.C., California, Georgia, and Hong Kong, where Bill served at the Assistant Naval Attaché at the US Consulate. Summers were often spent visiting family in Oklahoma and Missouri.
Bill attended the Naval Postgraduate College and earned a Masters Degree in Transportation. At one point, he was head of transportation for the Marine Corps. He served in Vietnam in 1966-67. He retired from the Marine Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1972 and the family moved to Stillwater, OK. where he obtained another degree. Bill later worked as a Real Estate Appraiser and then enjoyed "true" retirement. He taught himself computers, which became his hobby. He was also an avid reader and had a wide range of interests, including music. He was a true patriot and lived by the golden rule. To the people that knew him both in the US and overseas, he was a loyal and steadfast friend.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Carla Sullivan of Stillwater, OK. One son: Michael Sullivan of Carrollton, TX. Two grandsons: Mitchell and Matthew Sullivan. Sister-in-law: Narda Loy Caton and husband Jon, the Caton/Dressel and Visser families of Tulsa, the Collier family of Bartlesville, the Wilcox family of Woodward and Lynn Kancel of Kansas City.
Services will be 10:00 AM Saturday December 30, 2017 at the Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel in Bartlesville, OK. Interment will follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville. Family and friends may send online condolences at www.stumpff.org.
