Florence Akin, 95, passed away on February 25, 2017 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She was a long serving Secretary to the Stillwater Girl Scouts.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on March 17, 2017 at Fairlawn Cemetery. Rev. Deborah Meinke will preside.
She was born in Stillwater on December 10, 1921 to Herbert Stanton White and Margaret Florence White. She attended area schools which included St. Francis (Oklahoma City), Windy Center, Lincoln, Sumner and her final two years graduating high school from Eureka School (1939). She later attended Oklahoma A&M.
She married Guy Roland Akin on February 10, 1940 in Pryor and lived in Iowa one year before returning to the Stillwater area. She worked at the original Holiday Inn and later the Curran Motel while attending night classes and taking bookkeeping courses. She was later hired by the Magic Empire Council of the Girl Scouts and served as the Secretary at the Girl Scout Lodge for 17 years retiring in 1984.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband, parents and stepmother Hazel White, brothers John and Frederick White and sisters Vera Sooter, Vivian Rieman, Patricia Nolan, and Frances White.
She is survived by her sister Phyllis White of Stillwater; daughters Karen Wilson of Oakland, Calif., and Rebecca Switzer of Santa Fe, N.M.; son Gary Akin of Beverly Hills, Florida; grandchildren, Scott Jacobson of Dallas, Texas and Chase Jacobson of Bend, Oregon; and four great-grandchildren.
