Floretta's Story

Text size

Floretta Wilson, 84, passed away January 1, 2017. She was born March 16, 1932 in Custer City, Oklahoma. Full of energy and sharp as a tack, she never slowed her pace or failed to appreciate all that life had to offer. A celebration of her life will take place Friday, January 6, 2017, 10:30 am at the First United Methodist Church, Stillwater. Visitation will occur at Strode Funeral Home Thursday, January 5, 2017, 6:00-7:30 pm.
On July 27, 1951 in Clinton, Oklahoma she married the love of her life, Aubra Wilson. During their 65-year marriage they were partners in everything, including their deep faith and love of OSU. Floretta was a constant support to her husband throughout his career with OSU Extension, which took them to Frederick, Beaver and Woodward. With a talent for math, she worked in these communities for an accountant, bank and county treasurer. In recent years, her support shifted to being Aubra's loving caregiver. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Kevin Brent Wilson, who tragically passed away in 1977, and Kimberly Wilson Sadler of Stillwater. She also acquired a "bonus son" in her son-in-law, Darrell Sadler.
Known for her creativity and kind spirit, you were very lucky if you received one of her pieces of art as a token of affection - hand crocheted doilies and hot pad holders, oil paintings and needlepoints were cherished gifts! And, her candy making was generously shared, especially at Christmastime, when you hoped you made her peanut brittle recipient list!
Floretta and Aubra retired in 1985 and enjoyed every minute of this phase of their lives. They moved to Stillwater that year and served as contractors for their new home. They were hands-on participants in every aspect of this project and then set about creating beautiful flower and vegetable gardens, passions for both of them. To the delight of neighbors and friends, roses and tomatoes were frequently shared! Their new home in Stillwater also allowed them to attend unlimited OSU sporting events and Animal Science Alumni activities. Floretta had an extensive circle of friends around these activities as well as through the First United Methodist Church, where she was a member, active in her missionary group and an organizer of the prayer chain for many years.
In their retirement, Floretta and Aubra became avid travelers. Their annual trips to Colorado with close friends spanned almost five decades. Many trips were taken to Alaska and Canada. Among their favorite memories were a trip to Denali Park and a train trip across Canada to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.
In January 2014, they moved to Primrose Retirement Community in Stillwater, where they were charter residents. Although they missed their gardens and the home they'd built, they enjoyed many friends in their new community.
Floretta is survived by her husband Aubra of the home, her daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Darrell Sadler of Stillwater. She is also survived by special sister-in-law Dorothy Mintz, one sister, Janet Bynum and numerous relatives. She leaves a lasting legacy through many young people who came into her life and experienced her unconditional love. She was predeceased by her son, Kevin; parents, John and KatieMintz; sister, Vi Jones; and brother, Clifford Mintz.
In her memory, donations may be made to the Kevin Wilson Memorial Scholarship through OSU Foundation or the First United Methodist Church, Stillwater.
