James E.'s Story
James E. Choate, 81, passed away on June 21,2016 at home
in Stillwater, OK, with his family by his side. Jim was born on January 3,
1935 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to James A. and Virginia Day Choate.
Jim spent his early years living with his maternal grandparents in Stillwater, OK. He graduated from Arkansas City, KS High School in 1953. He attended what was then Oklahoma A & M from 1953-1958 . After a brief stint in the military , he returned to Stillwater where he completed his graduate degree in Guidance and Student Personnel in 1961 and was a graduate assistant with Coach Henry Iba.
Jim began his coaching career in Claremore, OK in 1961, and onto Hutchinson, KS, Tulsa Bishop Kelley, and Catoosa, OK. After coaching, he began his career in the insurance industry, retiring as a General Adjuster for GAB Inc. He retired as a Catastrophe Office supervisor in 1997. After retirement Jim and Kathy moved to Stillwater and continued to support and follow OSU athletics while following their children and grandchildren's endeavors.
In May 1961 , Jim married Katherine Adcock. They were happily married for 55 years.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
Jim is survived by his wife Kathy of Stillwater, OK; 2 sons, Joel Choate (Jennifer Elwell-Kruger) of Mount Dora, FL, James P. (Missy) Choate of Lawton, OK; One daughter, Cinnamon Choate (Chuck) Walker of Purcell , OK. Grandchildren; Peighton and Cale James Walker; Mckenzie and Mattie Choate; Kennedy and Kasey Kruger and other relatives.
A memorial service will be held at O- Club Room at Gallegher-Iba Arena at 1:00 p.m. on August 20, 2016.
