Janet's Story

Text size

Janet Marsden Hargrove, 77, died on November 30, 2016, at her home in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, December 5, 2016, at the First Christian Church with Brian Ahern officiating. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery.
Jan was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on March 31, 1939 to W. Ware Marsden and Virginia (Lewis) Marsden. She married Frank B. Hargrove on August 4, 1961.
Jan graduated from Stillwater High School in 1957. She earned her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in education from Oklahoma State University. She began her teaching career in Tulsa before moving back to Stillwater, joining the Stillwater Public Schools as an elementary teacher. Many will remember her as their third grade teacher in any one of the following elementary schools: Westwood, Skyline, Will Rogers, or Sangre Ridge.
Jan spent many hours with Frank enjoying social activities like dinner club and golf. They also loved the outdoors, spending weekends at their lake house through the years. They hosted numerous family members and friends for boating, water skiing, fishing, birdwatching, card playing, and, of course, eating delicious, home-cooked meals. Many wonderful memories were made through times of shared stories, love, and laughter.
Jan was known for her devotion to family, sense of humor, and positive attitude. Her positive attitude was no more apparent than how she dealt with serious health issues for the past twenty years. Not only did she have a direct influence in the education of hundreds of school children spanning thirty years as a teacher, she also encouraged and inspired family and friends as she faced adversity with remarkable hope, courage, and fortitude.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, and is survived by three children: a son, Timothy Poe Hargrove; two daughters, Teri Hargrove Round and husband, Kip; and Tina Hargrove Ahern and husband, Brian; five grandchildren, Jennifer Round and Daryl Round Tannehill; Zachary, Kylie, and Bree Ann Ahern; two great grandchildren, Devin Thompson and Digby Frank Tannehill; and one sibling, Beverley Rae Tully.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Transverse Myelitis Association, 1787 Sutter Parkway, Powell, OH 43065-8806, or the charity of your choice.
