God welcomed Joseph Andrew Nelson into eternal life in Heaven on November 28, 2016 at the age of 67. Joe was born into our earthly world on November 30, 1948, in Guthrie, Oklahoma to Zelma and William (Bill) Nelson. Joe married the love of his life, Jenny Lee (English), on September 1, 1967 in St. Mary's Catholic Church after graduating from Guthrie High School earlier the same year. He then went on to attend Oklahoma State University and Central State University before serving in the Army Reserves for six years. Joe loved his children and grandchildren, they were the center of his world.
Joe built a lifelong career around his interest in sports, once owning Nelson Sporting Goods in both Edmond and Guthrie before becoming a salesman for W. Lamar Young & Company, Winning Edge, and, finally, Midwest Sporting Goods in Tulsa.
An avid outdoorsman, his passions included hunting and fishing as well as working in his yard and bird watching. Joe eventually transformed his fondness of fishing into a fine craft as a founding member and officer of the National Fishing Lure Collectors Club where he made many friends throughout the U.S. and Canada. He was also committed to his work with the Golden K Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jenny, of the home; three children, Amy Bryant and husband Jeff, Julie Wilson and husband Greg, and Christopher Nelson and wife Elizabeth; four grandchildren, Zach and Maggie Bryant, Nate Wilson, and Samuel Nelson, all of Stillwater; two sisters, Nancy Parker and husband Norman, and Sandra Burtcher and husband Chuck, as well as a great many other family and friends in whose hearts and memories Joe fondly remains.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, sister Ginger Scheihing, and brothers Bill and Johnny Nelson.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, December 2, 2016 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Stillwater (601 S. West St.). Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery in Guthrie (1808 N. Pine St.). Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
In lieu of flowers, Joe would be honored for donations to be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation or St. Francis Xavier Capital Campaign, 416 W. 7th, Stillwater, OK 74074.
