Kenneth Dale Cox, Jr. 78, died December 10, 2016 after a short illness. He was born August 28, 1938 in Harrisonville, Missouri to Faye Bowden and Kenneth Cox, Sr. After attending public schools in Missouri, he went to work for Brown Shoe Company and later taught high school English, Speech, and Drama in DeSoto and St. Louis, Missouri. He earned a B.A. in Theatre from Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri and later earned both an M.A. and Ph.D. in Theatre at the University of Nebraska. He married Joyce Freed Cox in 1966, and, shortly after their daughter Amy was born in 1970, moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma where he accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Theatre at Oklahoma State University. Their second daughter, Dinah, was born in 1974. In addition to serving as Department Head from 1984-1992, Cox taught Theatre History in the Theatre Department at OSU from 1970 until his retirement in 2003. He received a number of professional honors, and served as editor of Theatre Southwest. In addition to his lifelong commitment to theatre, he was a gifted teacher, good father, and dedicated public servant. Throughout his adult life, he enjoyed baseball, Democratic politics, gardening, and playing with his many canine companions. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, his stepfather, Albert Mallory, nephew Jeff Bay, sister Susan Mallory Riddell, and wife Joyce. He is survived by his daughter Amy Cox, her husband Chuck Vanek, and Chuck's daughter Aliza of Minneapolis, Minnesota, daughter Dinah Cox and partner Lisa Lewis of Stillwater, sister Linda Mallory Price and husband Robert Price of Los Angeles, niece Jill Bay Weber and husband Jim Weber of St. Louis, Missouri, sister-in-law, Delma Freed of Fairbury, Illinois, many other nieces, nephews, and cousins, and a great number of friends and former students. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Kenneth Cox's name to the Oklahoma State University Department of Theater or Mobile Meals of Stillwater. Please also join Ken's daughters and friends on Wednesday, December 14 any time between 4:30 and 6:00 PM at the Brentwood Clubhouse, Brentwood Park Estates in Stillwater.
