Lionel's Story

Lionel C. Harris, the son of the late Clarence Harris, Sr., and Ethel Williams Harris, was born on September 14, 1927 in Yale, Oklahoma and was reared and educated in the Council Valley Community.

Lionel started to work in a service station at the age of 13, and after serving in the Navy during World War II, he started his own oil company in 1954 and later built a service station in Cushing in 1958. For the past 63 years, he had owned and operated Lionel Harris Oil Company north of town.

Lionel was united in marriage to Beatrice Long on August 24, 1946 in Cushing. Bea preceded him in death on August 8, 2014.

Lionel's involvement in the community other than his businesses include his membership in the Cushing Masonic Blue Lodge and a 32nd Degree Mason, Consistory at Guthrie, receiving his 50 years pin with both organizations; an Akdar Shriner since 1972; longtime member of the American Legion and V.F.W; a member of the Bank of Cushing Board of Directors; he helped organize and form the Cushing Fairlawn New Zion Cemetery Association, serving on the Board, and over the years had been active with the Salvation Army, the Hospital Foundation, the Cushing Community Rodeo, Boy Scouts, Cushing Community Theatre and the Downtown Revitalization Association.

The Harris's received the Cushing Chamber of Commerce Community Achievement Award in 1995 for their many contributions and service to the city of Cushing.

Surviving include his wife, Geraldine Baxter Shaull of the home; one brother Clarence Harris, Jr. and his wife Betty of Yale, and other nephews, relatives and friends including the Naifeh Family and very special people, Paul and Brenda Magdeburg.

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 3:00 P.M. in the Oak Grove Baptist Church with Reverend George Brock, III, Pastor Steve Tiger and Pastor Larry Lehr officiating.

Burial will follow in the Fairlawn Cemetery.
