Sam's Story

Sam G. Harris, a longtime Cushing resident, passed away on Sunday morning with his family by his side at the age of 74. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 1, 2016 at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Cushing. Reverend Marty Brock will officiate.
Arrangements are entrusted to Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Cushing, Ok.
Sam was born on January 25, 1942 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma to the late Samuel W. and Amaree (Holloway) Harris. He grew up in Wynnewood, OK, graduating from Wynnewood High School in 1960. After high school, Sam attended Okmulgee Tech and received a Technical Degree in Diesel Mechanics and during that time he rode bare back bronco's in the IRA circuit. Sam married the love of his life, Peggy Scott on October 8, 1965 at her parent's home in Wynnewood, Oklahoma. Sam attended O.U. School of Engineering and received his degree in Mechanical Engineering. He began his career at Champlain Refinery in Enid, then Vicker's Refinery in Ardmore, and then Cushing Hudson Refinery till the closing in 1982. After the closing of the Hudson Refinery, he started his own business, PH Contract Service where he traveled all over the world, working for Refinery Insurance Adjusters mainly (Lords of London in England and AIG in Corpus Christi, Chicago, and New Orleans). He opened a refinery in Fruita, Colorado and while in Colorado, he started flying lessons and later became a pilot. He was a member of the University of Oklahoma - Engineering Alumni Assoc., American Assoc. of Mechanical Engineers, NPRA- National Petroleum Refiners Assoc., and Cushing Rotary Club. Sam enjoyed being on the farm, baling hay and watching his cattle. He also liked to paint, work on vehicles, and fix anything that was broken. Sam loved taking his family to Auctions, skiing in the mountains, exploring caves, visiting history museums and tractor pulls. Sam was a brilliant engineer and had invented numerous items throughout his career.
Sam is survived by his loving wife Peggy of the home, daughters Yavonn Giddeon and husband Robert of Cushing, Beth Lehr and husband Mark of Sapulpa, Tonya Tyner and husband Travis of Stillwater, grandchildren Gibson, Elizabeth, Paul and Caleb Giddeon, Sydni and Maxx Lehr, Kasey Goodin and husband Kyle, Benny and Josey Teegarden, Talyn Tyner.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
