Theodore's Story

Text size

Theodore Raymond Maxwell -- or Ted, as we know him -- Son of William Ray Maxwell and Berniece Alfa Spivey Maxwell of Wichita, Kansas, was born March 6, 1941 and passed away at home September 28, 2017 surrounded by his dogs and with family by his side.

From age 10 he worked before and after school and summers in his father's Wichita, Kansas wholesale meat market. He learned the trade as a boy, was held to the standard of a man, and exceeded that standard. Ted exceeded every standard.

He completed some college, served in the United States Air Force, conquered addictions to drugs in 1968 and to alcohol in 1972 through his membership in Alcoholics Anonymous and his adherence to the 12-Step Program. An alcoholic with an AA Birthday of September 14, 1972, Ted has been sober for 45 years.

Ted was born with an affinity for electricity and became an electrical contractor. He ran his own business and then he went to work in the Electrical Shop at Oklahoma State University. Ted became Oklahoma State University Physical Plant Electrical Foreman and worked at OSU 20 years until his retirement in May 2006. Even as foreman, Ted was hands on with comprehensive knowledge of electrical and building codes - a mentor to others.

He was fascinated with technology and gadgets - up-to-date on the latest development - but valued people far more than things. He cooked a mean pot of beans; chili with jalopeno, anaheim, and pablano peppers; and smoked ribs that fell off the bone, melted in your mouth, and singed your tongue with flavor.

His sense of humor, like the flavors of the foods he prepared, was bold, unapologetic, and wonderful.

Ted's wife is Renee; his children are Michelle Stokes, Art Thompson, Bruce Thompson, Darwin Baker, Richard Maxwell, and Melissa Caldwell. He is grandfather to Jolene, Kayla, Nick, Nate, Noah, Lily, Emsley, Piper, and Indigo.

His love is boundless, as is our love for him.
