Stillwater, OK - Donald Lewis "Hutch" Hutchison, long-time Stillwater resident, passed away recently at the age of 93. As per Don's wishes and request, no services will be held.
Don was born on September 15, 1931, at Harris Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, the son of Ben and Dora Annie Hutchison. The family later moved to Parsons, Kansas, where Don graduated from Parsons High School in 1949. He then attended Oklahoma A & M college (now Oklahoma State University), where he was very active in campus life. He was a member of Lambda Chi fraternity, student government, and Air Force ROTC, as well as other organizations. He earned a B.S. degree in Business in 1953.
On August 29th of that same year, he married Julia (Judy) Thorne. After joining the Air Force, they ventured to Warren AFB in Wyoming and George AFB in California before Don received an honorable discharge from the U. S. Air Force. Upon moving to Stillwater in 1959, Don began a successful business in the insurance industry. He first fashioned an accomplished career with Central Life Assurance by being a fair, informative, and compassionate agent. He earned multiple local, state, and national awards in this field, including the coveted Chartered Life Underwriters certification, and he yearly received national Round Table awards for exceptional sales accomplishments. Later in his career, Don became a Farmers Insurance agent and added home and auto underwriting to his portfolio, where he continued to excel and serve. He retired from Farmers Insurance in 2000.
Don was always generous with his time and leadership abilities in volunteering in civic organizations in Stillwater. He served the First Christian Church in many different positions and loved the church with all his heart. He was the president of the Payne County Heart Association for ten years. Noon Lions, Exchange Club, Stillwater Tennis Association, Payne County Drug Court, and Early Settlement Mediation were among the many organizations who were beneficiaries of Don's generous spirit and leadership.
Don was an ever loyal and true alum of OAMC/OSU. From student government and campus involvement while he was an OAMC student to Posse and Alumni Association and season ticket holder as an alum, Don loved his OSU Cowboys. He especially enjoyed traditional Homecoming activities such as the Homecoming parade and the Walkaround.
The state of Colorado held a special place in Don's heart. He truly loved spending time in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. He hiked, fished, backpacked, camped, and skied, both with family and with friends. Estes Park, YMCA of the Rockies, Rocky Mountain National Park, Breckenridge, and Pitkin were all special places for him. Together Don and his son David scaled Longs Peak, one of the tougher fourteeners in RMNP.
Don is survived by his wife, Judy, and his three children and their families: David and Susan Hutchison of San Marcos, Texas, and their daughter, Bailey, of Brooklyn, New York; Ashley and Bryan Nance and their son Matt, all of Stillwater; and Donna and John Connors of Georgetown, Texas, and their daughter, Kate, of Denver, Colorado.
The family wishes to thank Perry Green Valley Nursing Home and Companion Hospice for their loving care and support.
