Katherine Tompkins McCollom
Katherine T. McCollom died at the age of 96 on November 2, 2019, in Fort Worth, TX, from kidney failure. She was born on October 9, 1923, in Durant, OK, the third daughter of Roy R. and Laura Leard Tompkins. She moved to Stillwater, OK when she was in the eighth grade.

During the 1940s, Katherine graduated from Stillwater High School; earned a BS Degree from the College of Education at Oklahoma A&M; married Kenneth A. McCollom on January 4, 1944, in California; held various secretarial positions in California and New Jersey; and served as counselor in Willard Hall while earning her MS degree at A&M. After WWII she taught freshman English for two years at A&M and at the University of Illinois, Champagne/Urbana.

In the 1950s she moved with her husband to Bartlesville, OK, where Kenneth worked for Phillips Petroleum. They had two sons, Alan and Neal McCollom, who survive her. The family moved to Oak Ridge, TN, and then to Idaho Falls, ID, when Phillips was developing nuclear energy.

In 1962, the family moved to Ames, IA, where Kenneth completed a PhD while Katherine worked in teacher placement at the university and completed course work for certification in counseling. Returning to Stillwater in 1964, she worked as a counselor in the College of Arts & Sciences at OSU.

At First United Methodist Church she taught pre-school. For more than 25 years she served as a volunteer in the surgery waiting room at Stillwater Medical Center. She was a member of United Methodist Women, League of Women Voters, Chi Omega alumnae, and Browning Society. Katherine enjoyed playing in several bridge groups. She served on the Stillwater Library Board when a new library was approved by the voters and built.

In addition to her two sons, she is survived by granddaughters Trina McCollom and Leslie McCollom and a step grandson, Jason Lopez, and his son Jase Lopez and by great granddaughter Annie Lee Fontaine. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Verna Lou and I cherish the memories of times we had with Katherine and Kenneth, especially times when they had us in their home for dinner. The table setting was perfectly arranged. The meal was always excellent, and the conversation was very enjoyable. After Ken retired, we visited them often and sometimes went to concerts together. After Kenneth passed, we visited Katherine often, and took her to a number of concerts and events. Most every Friday evening we would invite her to join us for dinner at the Stillwater Country Club, and she accepted about once a month. She insisted she did not want to impose, but she liked the fried catfish!! Our conversations were always a ...highlight of the week. We were impressed when Katherine decided to let Neal move her to Ft. Worth. However, it was a sad day for us when she left. We told her that we would miss seeing her. And she said "you can come to Ft. Worth to see me." It is very unfortunate for us that we never took a photo of the three of us before she left Stillwater (before I had a cell phone). And it is unfortunate that we were unable to travel to see her.
