Gene was born in Martha, Oklahoma to Mylus 'Monk" and Evelyn Anderson. He grew up in Mangum, Oklahoma. He was a proud 1955 graduate of Oklahoma A&M (OSU) with a degree in Business and ROTC and was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. While at OSU he met the love of his life, Janet Higgins, who he married on January 30, 1955. They lived a loving life of 64 years before her death in 2019. They raised three daughters, Stephanie, Susan and Fred who were his pride and joy.
Upon graduation from OSU, he went into the Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant, where he became a fighter pilot to earn an extra $100 a month and proudly served his country for 26 years. He had a passion for protecting our country while he flew the B47, B58, RF101, and the T38. During his military career, he lived in numerous places in the United States and Europe. While flying the B58 he was one of the first to go Mach II speed. He served a year in Vietnam flying the RF101. Then he moved to Sheppard AFB, TX where he trained the Iranian AF, German AF, and Vietnamese AF to fly the T38. He was the squadron commander for the Vietnamese Wing.
During his distinguished career, he was awarded medals in recognition for his meritorious service. He retired in 1981 as Deputy Commander of Tinker AFB. Upon his retirement, he went to work for Kerr-McGee in their coal division in Illinois. Upon retiring from Kerr-McGee, Gene and Janet moved to San Antonio so that Janet could fulfill her dream of teaching. They both worked at MacArthur High School where he was known as 'Driving Ms Janet'. They were very involved in the activities at MacArthur, especially athletics. When he would substitute teach in a History class everyone showed up along with others to listen to his experiences during his military career.
And the day came....Janet said to Gene, "I want to move home to Stillwater." Within a few months, they were on their way to where they began. Soon, they were purchasing season tickets to OSU Football, Basketball, and Baseball. That did not hold them back from attending many other athletic and social events at OSU. Gene proudly wore OSU Brightest Orange throughout his life. He will always be remembered as an Air Force Fighter Pilot who stayed forever Loyal and True.
Left to cherish his love and memories are his daughters, Stephanie (Mike) Millar, Ft Worth, Susan Anderson, Stillwater and Fred (Mike) Penn, Wichita Falls. Three grandchildren, Allyson (Phillip) King, Brent (Jennifer) Millar and Walt A. Penn. Three great-grandchildren, Presley Spurgeon, Brady and Parke Millar. His Brother, Carrol Anderson. As well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends around the world.
