Zelda Jean Norman Obituary
Stillwater, Ok - Zelda Jean Story Norman, born May 29, 1939, in Cleo Springs, Oklahoma passed away peacefully after a life defined by devotion to family, hard work, and community.
Zelda graduated from Cleo Springs High School in 1957 and began attending Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva that same year. She was active in college serving as the class treasurer and was the Aggie Princess her junior year. While at Northwestern, she met Bobby Norman in 1958. The two fell in love, and Zelda chose to leave college to begin her life with Bobby and raise their family. They were married July 23, 1960, at the Cleo Springs Methodist Church.
In 1960, Bobby and Zelda relocated to Fort Supply, Oklahoma , where Zelda's working life reflected both versatility and grit. She began her career at Western State Hospital in the personnel department, ultimately leading that dept we now call human resources.
Later, she traded high heels and pantyhose for shorts and sneakers, Zelda partnered with her close friend Glenda Holderman to own and operate the Fort Supply Diner Drive -In. After ten years, the business was sold, and Zelda entered her next chapter.
From 1983 to 1988, she served as the Superintendents Secretary at Fort Supply Public Schools, where her meticulous bookkeeping, remarkable shorthand skills, and calm competence were widely respected. In 1988, she returned to Western State—by then a Department of Corrections facility where she worked as the Wardens Secretary until her retirement in 2000.
Zelda was thrust into adulthood early in life. At just 14 years old, she and her sister Donna Toellner lost their mother. The two young girls made the best of the situation with only one parent and not only survived but flourished into two beautiful productive women. That sense of responsibility and loyalty never left her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Norman, in 2017. After Bobby's passing, Zelda moved from Fort Supply to Woodward for a few years and then to Stillwater, Oklahoma, in 2020.
Zelda and Bobby raised two children. Their daughter Jan & her husband Dale Wanger of Fort Supply and their son Steve & his wife Dianna Norman of Stillwater. Her children remained the great pride of her life. She was a devoted grandmother to Kirby Wanger and his wife Melissa, Casey Jo Gemmill and her husband Brendon, Cooper Norman, Chandler Norman, and Claire Kelley & her husband Conor, and a loving great-grandmother to Luke Wanger, Lane Wanger, Jace Gemmill and Cali Mae Gemmill.
Zelda loved sports especially basketball and volleyball and played competitively into her 50's. She supported her children and grandchildren wholeheartedly through too many activities to list, but she was always the enthusiastic cheerleader! She was the free throw champion in 2022 at Legacy Village retirement community! She was legendary for her fried chicken, her chocolate sheet cakes, and her unmatched frozen punch, especially cherished by generations at Fort Supply Schools.
She loved dancing and spent many joyful evenings with friends throughout northwest Oklahoma. She and Bobby were often the first on the floor whether it was a jitterbug, two-step, cotton eyed joe or the waltz and the last couple to leave. Several of the grandkids got their first dance lessons from grandma. She also enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas, Raton NM for the ponies , playing ten-point pitch with friends Jean "Ho Ho" Holloway and Pat Thomas.
Above all, Zelda was proudest of her family and their many activities quietly supporting each endeavor with steadfast love.
Zelda is preceded in death by her husband Bobby Norman, grandparents, parents, sisters-in-law Virginia Mae, Ruby Fay, and Frances Irene, brothers-in-law, Glenn "Red " Keeton, Wes Fleming, John Norman, Bill Toellner and nephews Glen Norman and Lance Mitchell and Jimmy Dailing and Glen "Juney" Keeton.
She is survived by her daughter Jan and husband Dale Wanger; son, Steve Norman and wife Dianna; sister Donna Toellner; five grandchildren: Kirby Wanger and wife Melissa, Casey Jo Gemmill and husband Brendon, Cooper Norman, Chandler Norman, Claire Kelley and husband Conor; four great-grandchildren, Luke & Lane Wanger, Jace & Cali Mae Gemmill; nephews Jackie Keeton; Brad and Monty Mitchell, Mike Norman, William Toellner; nieces: Donita Pitzer, Lesta Dewald, Tammy Garrison; sister-in-law, Katy Norman; many cousins and friends.
